It has been a long time coming, but we have actually had a couple of nice summery days in a row, if you can believe it.
In our house, that means that out come the long-sleeve shirts and hats, for the most part....and limited amounts of sleeveless clothing, skimpy bathing suits and tiny shorts.
The reason is simple: you need to avoid overexposure to the sun - and the best way to do that is to cover up.
(plus nobody needs to see me in skimpy outfits anyway....20 yrs old was quite a long time ago for me)
We don't look fashionable - rather dowdy actually.
My daughter often wears long cotton pants with a long-sleeved shirt (my choice). The pants are covered with many unidentifiable stains due to constant use, and the shirt comes to well-above her wrist bone and many inches of belly protrude underneath (her choice). Not that I have dressed her this way, but rather, she LIKES THESE ONES and as much as I try to hide them away to give to another, smaller, child, she keeps pulling them out and stuffing herself in.
My son looks quite dapper though, in his fancy button-up preppy shirts in stripes and plaids. This is due to the fact that they are loose, cool and long-sleeved, and we don't have many for him. So he always looks all dressed up, even if it is to play in the wading pool or the sand pile.
As for me, I usually just pull on something from the nearest pile of soon-to-be-washed laundry and away I go.....long sleeve shirt, and shorts of some description. Hmm, not so yummy mummy, but then again, there's no one around to impress but the mosquitoes and the neighbourhood retirees.
We do all wear our hats as well.......most hail from Value Village (it's so hard to buy kids hats with a big enough brim to block the sun - it seems to be fashion above function).
As for sunscreen - yes. BUT, we do try to limit the amounts, thus the apparel of the long sleeved and legged variety. Looking for the safest sunscreens? Be sure and check out the Cosmetic Safety Database to see how safe yours is.
See you at the beach!
We will be easy to pick out - as my kids have the full-body bathing suits and we will be hiding in the shade as much as possible. And we probably won't be there between 10 and 2, when the sun is at its peak burning capability.

ReplyDeleteWhen we're at home, Little One loves to be garment-free! Tee hee! However, Little One is pretty much covered and has a hat on at all times when we're out. My friends in the city laugh at the photos and say that Little One will hate me when she's older (because I make her wear a wide brimmed hat when we're outside). Hey, I don't care if she doesn't look "fashionable". What I think some people forget is how sensitive babies' and children's skin is and how they NEED to be protected. I'm putting a hat on my baby, and I don't care what anyone says! ;)
ReplyDeleteSorry for the rant! :)
P.S. You might be a good person to ask this question...At what age can we start to apply sunblock to babies' skin? I heard something about waiting until after they're a year old.
