Petrol in your Products?

So many nasty ingredients, so hard to remember the names of which ones you DON'T want in your personal care products.

Petrolatum, however, requires no mnemonic devices like parabens do (read Pair a Bens). The root of the word contains "petrol",which contains, you guessed it...gasoline, in a very general sense.

According to freedictionary.com, petrolatum is a translucent jelly-like substance obtained from petroleum. It is used as a lubricant and moisture barrier in skin creams (think Vaseline), diaper creams, medical ointments, and lipstick, among many others. This group of chemicals also includes other petroleum-based products such as mineral oil, baby oil....

Wait a minute...I used those last two items on my newborns' heads to help their cradle cap....

...brief pause for that to mentally sink in...

OMG!

Do we really want to use products from the oil industry on our children and ourselves?

After a quick rifle through the depths of my medicine cupboard, in the far back corners I found no less than 4 products that contain this junk. They haven't been used in a long time, but they certainly won't be used now. What's worse is, all are products for use on babies.

Next time you are out shopping, make sure that the only "petrol" products you buy are put in your vehicle's gas tank, and not in your medicine cabinet.

Now I have to come up with creative uses for some diaper rash cream and baby oil that don't include their original intended uses. I'm thinking along the lines of lubricating bicycle parts, perhaps...

Any suggestions? Please post a comment if you can think of anything. Since the products have already been manufactured, they may as well be used for something.
