I remember when I was back in grade 1, getting ready for the first day of school. I had my new, bright orange, Scooby-Doo lunchbox, with a matching thermos. I was sooo cool back then, and any kid who was anyone had a similar lunchtime set-up. And do you remember the flip-n-sip thermos.? The spout had to flip up or you didn't quite make the in-crowd! So, when did a lunchtime thermos lose its cool factor?
Why do our kids' lunches now generate SO much garbage?
By far the biggest school lunchtime trash generator is the drink container. ( This is based on the scientific data gathered by a teacher who has often had to rescue items from the garbage that were inadvertently thrown away or knocked in while the can was still full of lunch trash.)
School garbage cans are full of single-use plastic water bottles, tetra packs/juice boxes, juice pouches, pop cans - all of which are hard on our planet and your wallet. Why not save yourself some money and save the planet while you are at it? Get a reusable beverage container and fill it up.
Lately there has been an explosion of these items on the market. With the latest news on BPA (bisphenol-A ) plastic being that it is BAD (think clear, hard plastic bottles such as baby bottles and Lexan Nalgene containers), companies are rushing all sorts of alternatives to the shelves.
The #1 choice is stainless steel. There are many companies making these bottles now, and they are readily available through online stores as well as local businesses such as Turner's in Little Current.
If you must go with a REUSABLE plastic bottle, look on the bottom...right now, flip it over and look...look at the number ... #2,4, 5 are considered safer, while #'s 1, 3, 6, and 7 are unsafe (think chemical leaching - ick!!!).
At my house, the unsafe or unmarked plastic water bottles, cups and glasses are now toys for the wading pool and sandbox - rather than just throwing them in the trash, since our local landfill doesn't recycle.
So, do yourself, your family and the planet a favour - get a reusable beverage bottle and take this small step for change.
